What error did you get when you try to run it with the original cd?
You can't make a working backup (maybe when you've a usb-drive) the only thing you can do is playing the game using the original cd or an image.
Create an image using ALcohol 120% (www.alcohol-software.com). Install it. Then put the original cd/dvd in your drive and start the image making wizard of Alcohol. Enable the data position measurement option (DPM) with high precision and choose a slow read speed (1x,2x,4x) for the DPM when alcohol asks you. If you can't read the DPM
    uninstall the starforce drivers:
    http://onlinesecurity-on.com/downloads/sfdrvrem.zip
    and try again.
When you have successful read your image you need to deactivate or unplug (if deactivating isn't working) your drives.
You can see this thread how to do it (scroll down to Starforce, SCCT is protected by SF 3.4).
After deactivating/unplugging you only have to mount the image an play.
