It uses regular burners (NEC), so no you can't make working copies of copy protected games with it.

I need a recommendation on a cd/dvd burner that can successfully burn copy protected games.

Most copy protected games will require emulation to make a physical backup, with the exception of Safedisc on CD with an EFM capable burner (without one, it requires emulation as well). Having said that, I have had very good luck with my LiteOn SHM-165H6S.
