  • Workaround for upgrading to Vista

Operating System: Upgrade from Windows XP Home to Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit
Burning Software: Nero 6.6 OEM (had to be uninstalled before Vista upgrade)
Anti-Virus Software: AVG 7.5 (disabled before Vista Upgrade)
Daemon Tools version: 4.08 32-bit (uninstalled before Vista Upgrade)
    ------------------------------------------
On the final part of the Windows Vista upgrade process, it does a normal reboot at 64%. Vista then fails to start (BSOD, reboot loop). The BSOD is related to sptd.sys, with the message of "The driver mistakenly marked a part of it's image pageable instead of nonpageable."
sptd.sys is not removed on a Daemon tools uninstall on my system. Removing the driver in XP's Device Manager doesn't fix it.
If it happens on your system, use this workaround to complete Vista installation (without using Vista Rollback and having to start all over again)
    1. Boot from a UBCDWin disc or similar
    2. Rename the sptd.sys file (it's in your Windows/System32/Drivers folder)
    3. Restart your computer and complete Vista setup.
You can get UBCDWin at http://www.ubcd4win.com/
If you can't boot from UBCDWin or have already rolled back, rename the sptd.sys file, and restart Vista setup to successfully upgrade.
