  • SPTD V1.50 not installing on Vista SP1 beta

    Hello,

In order to verify compatibility of Daemon Tools with our latest optical storage bits, I've attempted to install Daemon Tools on my x86 test system running Vista SP1 beta. The install goes until it asks to reboot. However after you reboot it does not proceed. I tried then to install SPTD separately, it will not detect itself and upon install ask to reboot. Again after reboot SPTD does not detect itself. I've further followed steps at http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/you-...us-t16177.html and steps to delete the 'infcache.1' at http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/show...ght=infcache.1
No improvement, still stuck at SPTD not seen itself after (many) reboot.

Honestly I'd like also to have a more rational approach of this install issue and instead of trying random magic steps, i.e. know where SPTD installer keeps a log of what it did during install with result codes, as well as what logs SPTD driver generate during boot so I get a better chance to nail down the issue.

    Thoughts?

Is the SPTD kernel driver at all running? (f.ex. sc query sptd in a command prompt window)

Nope, not running. Apparently installed by fail to start:

      sc query sptd

      SERVICE_NAME: sptd
      TYPE : 1 KERNEL_DRIVER
      STATE : 1 STOPPED
      WIN32_EXIT_CODE : 31 (0x1f)
      SERVICE_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
      CHECKPOINT : 0x0
      WAIT_HINT : 0x0

Interesting is that now we have an exit code to investigate :-)

And what is in system event log from sptd? (binary data)

i cannot confirm this for x64 vista with sp1

Maybe also worth checking latest SPTD 1.53 they released recently.

            @dburg:
Let me guess: you are using kernel debugger?

SPTD and, consequently, DT do not support operation under kernel debugger.

Ah yes, I am using kernel debugger. (Test system for optical storage stack, so yes, I have kernel debugger attached.)

Sptd binary data in event log is (although not so useful now, more for documentation purposes):

              Binary data:

              In Words

              0000: 00000000 00000001 00000000 C0040004
              0008: 000000ED 00000000 00000000 00000000
              0010: 00000000 00000000

              In Bytes

              0000: 00 00 00 00 01 00 00 00 ........
              0008: 00 00 00 00 04 00 04 C0 .......À
              0010: ED 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 í.......
              0018: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........
              0020: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........

This is for vista wth sp1 beta, but not x64, it is x86.

I'll disable the kernel debugger and try again.

i guess you didnt read the bit about sptd/dt not liking kernel debuggers then?
