This seems possible, and plausible: A feature that allows an EMULATED CD-RW or DVD burning/writing mode.
In this mode, the emulated drive would become an active drive listed in any burning utility, ready to burn a dvd or cd.
Has this been suggested or does it exist already in another form elsewhere? The reason for this suggestion applies to creating images, but not in the same sense as other program utilities can already create. With this type of image creation, the emulated burning would produce an image on the hard drive in a controlled manner. Even though a program would try* to burn an image, it has to be possible to emulate the image burning process through software means. If a means exists, please allow a way to find it.
