  • CD Writer Slow Down

    Operating System: XP SP2
Burning Software: Alcohol 120%, Nero Burning Rom Ultra Edition
    Anti-virus Software: NOD32
    DAEMON Tools Version: 3.47

I have a 40 speed CD writer (also a 4 speed dvd writer combo) and recently installed Daemon Tools 3.47.

I was using Alcohol 120% to create back ups of my software, I was averaging speeds of about 26x (due to the speed build up in writing) and after installing Daemon Tools my CD Writer now bounces around in the speed it's recording at between 6x to 9x but never higher, this is while it's set to record at 40x, the previous speed options to record at have mysteriously dissapeared alltogether. (I can ONLY record at 40x setting now).

I uninstalled Daemon and the effects remain.

Tried uninstalling / reinstalling the drive, no difference.

Tried uninstalling / reinstaling Alcohol 120% and the effect remains.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Thank you in advance for any help.

Strange, check in device manager -> IDE controllers -> Primary or Secondary IDE controller (wherever your writer is connected) if DMA is active. Ensure the "Transfer Mode" is "DMA if available" and the "Current Transfer Mode" is set to DMA/UltraDMA.

It was the DMA, somehow installing Daemon Tools made my CD writer switch to PIO and it took uninstalling / reinstalling the IDE Controller to have it detect DMA again.

      Thanks for your help.
