Well, the instant I ran the installer, avast filesystem shield popped up saying that it
contained the Win32:Somoto-J as an infection. What's up with that?

Hello,

We have several legal partners to monetize our freeware. Such services recommend users to install 3rd party software (toolbars, search engines or some useful software) during DAEMON Tools installation. BUT it is optional.

Application.Win32.Somoto.J - offer signed and verified by SOMOTO.

Antivirus software can also detect partner's offers as the virus. You can uncheck appropriate options in the installation wizard, and nothing will be installed together with DAEMON Tools. This issue has already discussed our forum:

Unchecked offers cannot be installed during DAEMON Tools installation, no way the user's selection can be overridden or hampered by the installer.
