View Full Version : Nero fails to See Virtual Drives and Pauses On Nero Open

I am experiencing the known reported bug:

"Delay of up to 2 minutes (system seems frozen) when drives are scanned for first time after reboot (e.g. when explorer is opened). This appears to happen only on systems with VIA/ALI/AMD chipsets or a RAID-controller and only if you replaced the default hard disk controller busmaster drivers installed by Windows with an updated version from the chipset manufacturer. We're investigating this problem!
Current solutions:
Reinstall the drivers coming with your Windows version.
Deselect 'automount' under 'Options' in DAEMON manager and accept the delay when you mount an image. It only appears once every boot up.
This problem seems to be solved for most people now. Only a few still have some problems. If you're one of them please report it to our eMail including your full system configuration."

Which has not been solved for my system. I am using a VIA based MB
(Tyan S1590 MB) with the latest BIOS upgrades. I had loaded the VIA Busmaster drivers and have uninstalled them and reloaded WinME. The problem persists.

I have only Nero (newest release) as a burner software and VOB (Instant CD) and a number of other tools on my machine (NO ROXIO or other burner software however). Interestingly Nero does not see the Daemon managed drives as existing and the FREEZE only occurs if there are virtual drives allocated. The length of the freeze is proportional to the number of virtual drives allocated.

Any suggestions on where I start? :?

First try to uninstall VOB and see if it helps. It may install filter drivers (like Easy CD).

VeNoM thanks for the reply... Tried as you suggested and no luck. Uninstalled VOB (Instant CD/DVD) Still hangs for ~40 seconds on Nero open. Did some more research though. Very interesting observations. Nero does not see the Daemons drives even when Nero's Image Drive is loaded and enabled. The hesitation lockup disappears completely if you set the Daemon drive number to 0 (disabled). More importantly Nero also does the same hesitation if you use the Nero --> Extras --> AutoDetect CD-Rom selection. Under that menu it says it sees the Daemon drive(s) but can't identify their type. I tried changing the type of drive from Daemons Generic Stealth-DVD type to match my Sony DRU500A and it still did the same thing. So I went to the Registry and looked at the device entries. Interestingly I could get the hesitation to go away with Nero but only to the next reboot. Something about the entries:

[HKEY_USERS\zzz\Software\Ahead\Nero - Burning Rom\Recorder\FONDU KICKASS H0 T0]
"BusType"=dword:00000000
"AutodetWriteSpeed"=dword:00000001
"WriteCmd"=dword:00000000
"RawWriting"=dword:00000000

and

"DeviceDesc"="SONY DVD RW DRU-500A "
"ConfigFlags"=hex:00,00,00,00
"Disconnect"=hex:01
"SyncDataXfer"=hex:00

changed something. In the example here I changed the entry for the device characteristics from:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\SCSI\FONDU___KICKASS______ ___1\XBIOS&*ST3L28&0&0&0&000]
"Capabilities"=hex:14,00,00,00
"AutoInsertNotification"=hex:01

"Mfg"="(Standard CD-ROM device)"
"DeviceDesc"="FONDU KICKASS "
"ConfigFlags"=hex:00,00,00,00
"UserDriveLetterAssignment"="FF"

to match my Sony drive by editing the registry. (Named the type of drive to FONDU KICKASS because I new their would be no entries with those names in my registry and would be easy to find)

I think the entry: \XBIOS&*ST3L28&0&0&0&000 and or the entry for
"Driver"="CDROM\\0007"
has something to do with it. I am playing in the dark without knowing more about the internals. I will say that the fact that Nero sees the drives as an unknown type is most informative and that the pause is caused when Nero tries to identify the drives capabilities. Maybe One of the Daemon people might recognize these symptoms. Thanks

Something more that may help the developers or anyone else that is looking at this (Note the very end of it for ASPI drivers indicates no ASPI for Nero -- did I need one?) --Doc
