  • Installation Hangs

    Hey All,

First off, I just wanted to thank you for providing such a great tool. Though I am a noob on this board, I have been using DT for a good long while now. It has saved me much aggrevation on gaining access to required CD archives. Awesome work all around. Now with that aside, onto my problem.

I have used DT on a number of different workstations, without fail. Recently I tried to install it to a Toshiba Laptop (Protege 7200 CTE). The initial setup runs as normal, however when the setup tries to execute the .msi package the system immediately freezes and is unrecoverable. Following the system restart nothing has been added to the system. The system appears to hang before anything is able to be installed.

I have traced back the normally installed files and registry entries, nothing was at all added.

I tried running the installation directly by using the .msi package with the same results. Installation was attempted with the unit both docked and undocked.

As help the following text was grabbed using the /L*v option:

    ********************

I tested against multiple installation attempts and the log always ends at the same spot.

    Installation was attempted with packages:
    v3.33
    v3.29
    v3.26

I might have tried with v3.23 as well, but that was a while ago and I can't remember.

This is a clean install of Win2K Pro + SP3 and all the current patches/hotfixes. I have been able to install other software to unit without problem (items that use the Windows Packager as well). No burning software or cd burner is installed. Installation was attempted both before and after the installation of AV software (it was disabled post install).

I would think that the last errors listed in the log would be non-fatal, however I don't know what the installation package is attempting after that. I suppose I could reinstall the software to another unit and trace it myself, but I thought it might be easier to make a posting here in case something does need to be updated in the .MSI package.

    Thanks for the help !!!

Those errors you see in log are not fatal - but something else happens when you press next, do you? Does it allow you to select destination folder or it freezes at welcome screen?

      Venom,

Thanks for the reply. In answer to your question, what happens depends on how the setup is launched.

If I use the default setup package from the download file the following happens:

      - The setup package is run.
      - The EULA appears with no problem.
      - Clicking "Accept" quickly steps though the extraction
      and the readme.txt is loaded.
      - The readme text closed and the
'Do you want to launch "setup.exe" now?" appears.
      - After clicking next the "Preparing the installer" dialogue
      from the .msi briefly appears.
      - After this the dialogue is cleared from the screen
(presumably to load the next dialogue)
      and the system is
totally locked. The video shows the desktop, no other screen
is loaded, and mouse/keyboard input is unavailable.

I have run this with this with Task Manager running. When the system locks up all system services are frozen. On the rare occasion the first dialogue of the .msi package will load with the "Next" button available. If next is clicked the system locks up as described above. In both cases the log file reports the same information.

When attempting to run the file directly from the .msi package it is much the same:

      - The .msi package is run.
      - The "Preparing the installer" dialogue briefly appears and
the system locks up as described above.

Basically the installation never goes beyond this point. As I have said before, I have no problems installing any other software. The system has been wiped and reinstalled clean a couple of times in the attempt to get DT running.

Any input would be much appreciated.

      Thanks !!!

Really weird situation - do you use Windows Installer 2.0?

          Really weird . . .

Okay, I will give you that !!! Yes, the installer version is v2.0.

This is on a clean install of Win2K Pro, I don't have problems installing anything that uses the same packager system.

Is some non .msi based install available ???

          Thanks !!!

I've heard windows installer 2.0 on win2k causes problems. The solution is to install windows installer 1.7. I suggest googling for instructions and download.

Thanks for the tip. I did some searches for the Windows Installer v1.7, unfortunately most all the returns I found were redirected to the current v2.0. I did try download the current Windows Installer redistribution package. The installation/update of that yielded no no change in the installation attempt.

              Any other thoughts ???

Have you been able to install the deamon tools successfully? I have the same problem like you with a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4200 Notebook I'm using Win 2000 SP4. I tried to install the tools on a fresh installation but the system freezes every time after the Readme.txt when i press next

Do you allready know a solution for the problem?? or is this a Toshiba Problem?
