Knights of the Old Republic

I know there have been a couple threads on this topic before, but please forgive me. I am naive in the subject of copying disks (most prominently-new to the vocab), but I had some simple questions pertaining to copying Knights of the Old Republic disks. A friend made copies for me with his computer, then I attempted to use the backups to play. Because the software has "technology intended to prevent copying," I was directed to insert the Play Disc to start the game. Is there a way to bypass this requirement? I use the play disc most often so it is the most likely to be damaged and therefore would need to be replaced.

If you do have a good answer please reply in simple terms so that I can understand.
