  • SecuRom Old version.

    Hi

I have an original set of UK Info Disk v4.1 released in May 1999.

It is copy protected with SecuRom.

When I install and run with disk 2 in the drive I get "wrong disk inserted"

I think this is because the SecureRom version is so old and my CDRom Drive / PC so fast that they are both incompatible.

How can I tell from the files on the CD what version of secureRom this software is protected be. I have tried many of the copyprotectid programs but they fail to give a version number. Just Securom old V3 or below?

    Any help please ?

Does the program completely run from CD or do you have to install files on the HDD ?
If there is an installation check the install path with ProtectionID.

Which OS are you running ?
If Vista, try to run the executable in different compatibility modes.

UK Info Disk v4.1 (1999) (Old SecuRom)

      Thanks for the reply.

Its a two disk set. Install CD and Data CD.

The Install CD creates the a dir on c: with these files:- And requires the second CD to run not only for copy protection but the CD also includes the Data for the program.

The install directory copied to c\ contains the following :-

Though i suggested to try that if it's Vista:
Please try different compatibility modes (Rightclick on the UKid.exe -> properties,
click the Compatibility tab and check 'Run this program in compatibility mode for:',
try the modes in the drop down menu)

definately securom, haven't updated those files in protection id yet, cos they're sooooo old, and if i remember right petite hides a lot of the identifiable patterns think it'd be securom 3 or lower, so protection seems correct

compatability mode for windows 2000 if possible might be the best option

                Thanks for your help.

I tried both a run as and a clean 98 and then 2000 box and still came up with the "wrong disc inserted error". I tried a number of SecuROM loaders but none of them recognised the version of SecuRom.

Just as I was about to give up. I discovered a network install which installed a copy of UKID.exe minus the Securom wrapping and let me copy the contents of the second disk to hard drive. Just what I want it to do !!

Here is the results of both files (they were both called ukid.exe)

                ProtectionID Protection Report (txt format)

                00:45:01 | C:\Documents and Settings\_\Desktop\New Folder\UKid.exe | SecuROM (very old.. v3 or less) | Petite v1.4
                00:45:01 | C:\Documents and Settings\_\Desktop\New Folder\UKid Network.exe | Possible CD/DVD-Key or Serial Check

Again thanks for your help. I might of given up otherwise.

                      Here's how I fixed it:
Firstly, your computer must be running Windows 95.
Secondly your computer hardware must be comparable with what was available in the late 1990s. In those days pc's ran at clock speeds of 75-400 MHz and CD Rom drives were 8 speed or there abouts.
We found some 10 year old hardware (2002) and put it together but then slowed the clock speed down to 300 MHz. The wrong disc problems then disappeared.

UK Info 4.1 was built to run on a Windows 95 computer and windows 95 was built to run on hardware that was available in the late 90's like a DX4 100, a P 75, a P 100 etc.

                      Hope that helps.
