  • Civilization 4 problem! (Wonґt play)

Well, then Christmas eve has passed this year as well. I bought civilization 4 as a christmas present for my girlfriend this year. Unfortunately something is wrong with her DVD-player so she canґt read anything from the disc at her computer.

After some thinking (yes, buying a new DVD-player is an option, but not before january) I wanted to try out daemon tools, just to get her going. I made an .iso image of the DVD disc at my computer, installed daemon tools at her computer and copied the .iso image from my computer to her computer.

Further on I mounted the .iso file in daemon tools, emulated the safedisc copyprotection, installed the game and tried to run it, without success. Then I began reading in this forum, and found that the safedisc copyprotection is blacklisting the daemon tools software.

Next I downloaded safedisc 4 hide 1.1, and tried to run the game once more after pressing the hide button. This time the game did not ask for the game-cd, BUT it crashed. It crashed every of the following executions as well ... with the typical "do you want to send this error report to microsoft" type of message.

From this point on, I feel lost. I understand running daemon tools with the safedisc emulation alone would not help. But the case is that the safedisc 4 hide 1.1 application doesnґt seem to help me either. I have even tried (as someone has suggested) to disable all IDE/SCSI CD/DVD ROM drives on the computer.

Does anyone have any input on how to troubleshoot this one?

Nothing special in the hardware department:
    P4 2,4 Ghz CPU
    1 GB RAM
    More than enough free disk

Your image is most likely bad. You HAVE to make an exact 1:1 copy, using the Alcohol options. You can find an easy way to create copies like that in these forums.
Also before that try to download the 1.09 or 1.52 patch, according to the fixes list it had problems with quite a lot hardware.

Not to disturb anyone unnecessary, but do you have an url to the thread describing this process? Is the alcohol-thing necessary on DVD-discs? And further more, what piece of software do you guys use to make these .iso files? Iґve used a program called "UltraISO". The first time, I just created an ordinary .iso file without any specific settings (that obvious did not work). The next time, I used the Alcohol as output format, and at the same time I chose to skip bad sectors. Does that sound correct? To not produce any unnecessary confusions, I guess it is best to use the same piece of software that you guys use ... so I donґt mix up anything.

Skynet try using a program called Alcohol 120% to create your image files.

I tried that as well, but I read another thread in this forum stating that it is impossible to make a working backup from a dvd-disc protected with safedisc 4.x Is this true? And if it is true, why is it so? Is it hardware-related? No dvd-burner that are able to make an excact 1:1 copy of the DVD?

You don't have to burn a disc. You can play from the DAEMON Tools' virtual drive by mounting an image file. You don't have to worry about burning discs.

I have the same problem too! Please help!

Here is the error message/protokol after starting the game.

When I'm not using sf4hider.exe, it can't find the DVD or CD in the "drive".

              AppName: civilization4.exe AppVer: 0.21.0.1674 ModName: ~df394b.tmp
              ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 00084c9c

I tried to deactived the real CD and DVD drive, but there is the same failure. I tried all this on a other Computer, with the same problem!

(I'm using Daemon 3.74, safedisc4hider, the game is installed)

              Thank You 4 your help!

Civ4 also works with 3.47 and SD4Hide... It cannot be the problem. I played it with 3.47 before.
