I would disagree that it's best to leave it enabled. As a matter of fact, if you're running over 1.5GB of RAM, it actually increases performance to disable the PF. Though I have to admit I still haven't got around to disabling it on mine since my last reinstall. Not because it's not worth it, just because I'm too lazy, lol.
