For me with the external .mds without patch 1.1 the game starts fine every time.SPTD 1.47 Beta and Vista Ultimate 32 bit. After patch 1.1 it works only the way dermoritz says.Tried to update sptd to 1.49 but this does not help.

I had same problems and found that the cause was due raid 0. I have 2 Western Digital 250 Gb * 2 (500 Gb) RAID 0 array and DIRT never started, so I plug an external USB HD and now everything is running like a charm. I hope this could help anyone experiencing problems with DIRT.

I cann't run the game from RAID 1 disk on Intel D965OT (iaStor.sys). I get "Emulation software detected" each time. I tried with SPTD 1.47 and 1.49. Latest D-Tools.

Just a guestion, are your disk dynamic?

Edit: ATM, it seems it's not possible to play from software raid system (yes, mb raid is comparable to software)
To play, you currently (at least on my computer) need to have avolume on non-dynamic IDE or SATA drive.
To be tested with real raid controlers (tried with Promise FastTrak 8350, runs kinda well)

is it the same for ahci mode?

It is now working here after disabling raid option from BIOS...

                              Is this a StarForce issue?

No, it seems it's intented, to prevent use from network images. Computer freezes for a few second, so no info can be get from network, so the image cannot be authenticated. This also leads to unusable images on software raid (and motherbord raid, same thing), coz it needs CPU to run (more than simple part on IDE or SATA).
