Can't Copy anything not even rip CDs

Hi All,

I have been backing up my games over the last couple of weeks and all seemed to be going well (thanks pseudo555).

Out of the blue my desktop stopped being able to rip cd/dvd images. I thought this was a little strange but as my laptop still worked I didn't worry about it.

I have recently been trying to rip audio CDs to MP3 and have found that this doesn't work on my desktop either. Now I'm starting to worry.....

There are 2 physical SATA dvd drives on the system they both "read" disks fine, audio cds will pay, games will run etc but neither will allow the data to be ripped.

Has anyone else had a similar problem at all?

OS = Vista 32 SP1
Tried ripping with DT, Alcohol, WMP
Got 2 virtual drives, one from DT the other from Alcohol
2 physical drives, both SATA one DVD Rom the other DVD+- RW Dual layer with lightscribe

How do you rip your audio cd ?

Have you try another codec (just to check the mp3 one is not corrupted/missing/etc. ) ?

Yes, tried a couple of different bit rates on mp3 and on wma.

Trying to rip audio using wmp11 but I don't think it's application specific.

Just tried several rips off 2 different disks in both drives creating an image with Alcohol 120, they all fail with the following error;

Disk Read Error at: 4864
Disk dumping failed

I would have assumed a scratch if it was just one cd
I would have assumed a dirty head if it was just one drive
I would have assumed application if only one was not working.

With several disks failing at the same point in several apps on several disks........ I'm out of ideas.

ok, more updates.

DTL can create an image from either disk.
nothing else seems to be able to read the disk correctly
WMP will not Rip
WMP will pay about 60 seconds of track 1 then stops
Alcohol fails at same point every time
Disk Jugler fails at same point every time.

Ubuntu seems to have no problems with anything.

I'm starting to suspect a piece of software has installed a driver which is messing with the cd drives

Hi All,

After much messing round I tried re-installing the sata drivers using the latest versions from nvidia. This seems to have solved the problem.

I still don't know what caused it but it's fixed now.
