I've also encounter the problem. I encountered it with BattleField 1942, X-Men 2 (Rise of Apocolypse), and a couple of other games.
Like previously mentioned no cd patches allow the game to run, but they do not run from the CD's.
I'm not about to reformat my system (that is not an acceptable solution in my view). There has to a specific cause, and its important to find out what it is and how to fix it.
I'll let you know if I figure anything out. It's either something in the registry or a file in the windows directory (a dll perhaps).
