When you run your starforce protected game for the first time and see the famous frontline window we all love so much asking for a cd-key, does it matter which key you enter?

I wonder if the cd-key you receive when you buy a game works uniquely with the bundled DVD or if it is ok to be used with any copy of that game...

No it's not unique to that specific copy. If you "acquired" a copy from some other location and used any key (for that game), it would work (as long as the game doesn't require an internet connection to check the key every time you run it...).

If it's not a unique key, chances are it won't work with multiplayer because they generally ban those "well-known" keys and check for duplicates that are on at the same time.

The big reason they use cd-keys is to reduce load on their servers (for multiplayer), so that they don't have 10,000 or more people (that shouldn't be there) using up bandwidth and resources when they never bought the game and therefore never had a unique key. They can't really stop people from sharing their keys (and cracking games) in order to play singleplayer...but they can usually keep people from multiplayer. I think that answered your question....

I've heard there are two different versions of Starforce. One doesn't request the cd serial becouse it checks only a defined sector of the cd, searching if it is original or not. The other version also checks the disk but request a cd serial to start the checking process. I think that Starforce uses unique serial for every disk and checks if the serial entered corresponds with the one recorded in the cd you entered. The only way to bypass this protection is to get some of those hacking programs or keygen software to generate a valid key, but I don't know if this trick really works or not.
