Well dog-goneit, you were right. I had a faulty memory module that the standard system check thought was oK, but had a few bad addresses.... the system had been a bit unstable but nothing bad enough to suggest the RAM. I'm yet to test whether the isos will install properly now, but it seems likely this was the cause.
