atapi.sys locked!!!

On XP SP2 with Windows' own backup program it worked for me, I chose to backup the system state along with protected system files and I used the shadow copy method.

Check if you have "Volume Shadow Copy" and "MS Software Shadow Copy Provider" services enabled, and have required permissions (from Group Policy Editor).
