It would be very useful to have the ability to mount images that are on an ftp server. The server would probably have to support resuming downloads for it to work. It would be better to be able to mount an image that you only need a few files from than to download the whole thing.

transparent streaming of contained images and media
Indeed. I've hacked together a program to stream xvid avi and mpeg2 contained in rar's on a remote ftp. However it would be even more useful if it could somehow feed the bin/cue data to daemon tools programmatically and then instruct a player program to access the mounted image, while it's still coming through the network and transparently unrarred on the way to daemon tools.
What you want is slightly different but some kind of daemon tools support or image reader api is needed probably in both cases.
