I think Norman Bates is right, I don't see any wizard where you can search the already indexed files. So sorting not searching is your option unless you want to make a feature request.
You can goto the view menu, then choose details. This will change the Image Catalog window into something with sortable columns like Sort by Name, Image Path, Size, Last Mounted Drive, Last Mounted Time. You can also apply labels to your images to help sorting them in the future.
