  • Daemon Tools 3.47; driver installed to "Other Devices"

Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 1 (2600.xpsp2.050301-1526)
    Burning Software: nero 6, cdrwin 4.0a, dvd-lab 1.3, clonecd 5.0.2.2
    Anti-virus Software: virusscan enterprise 7.1.0
    DAEMON Tools Version: 3.47

    What I've done before setup:
    1) disabled virusscan
    2) disabled Tiny Personal Firewall (and turned off cable modem)
    3) deleted C:\windows\inf\infcache.1
    4) exited all other programs such as winamp, getright, ad muncher...

Result after trying to install DTools 3.47:
    1) The virtual drive is not created in "My Computer"
    2) I am unable to set a drive letter for the Device 0 (drive letter is always blank, and reverts to blank after I pick a letter)
    3) "Device Manager" shows a SCSI drive

I've captured a pic of the "Device Manager":

Seems there're no or wrong drivers installed, check this thread:

Check in device manager if any drivers are installed for the virtual devices. There should be cdrom.sys, storprop.dll and redbook.sys.
If no drivers are installed, click on install drivers and point to cdrom.inf supplied by OS (in hidden Windows\Inf folder).
Where can I find the "install drivers" button to click ?

Either double-click on "Generic DVD-ROM..." and select "(Re-)install driver" or right-click on "Generic DVD-ROM..." and select it. I'm using a german Windows XP so I cannot tell you exactly, but there should be only one context menu entry that suggests installing.

ah, OK. I clicked "Update Driver".

when I tried to update the driver to the right one I noticed that there is no C:\WINDOWS\inf\cdrom.inf

              FIXED!
I searched my C:\ and pointed the installer to wherever it found them, for example, some were in "System32" and others were in "Lastgood".

Re: missing cdrom.inf with good screenshot

Very good news! While you're at it try running SFC /SCANNOW from the command prompt. You'll need to have your windows CD handy if you run that command.

Operating System: WinXP SP2 + all pre-SP3 patches
Burning Software: Nero + ISO Recorder v2
                  Anti-virus Software: NOD32
                  DAEMON Tools Version: 3.47

or if you got lucky, and have a %windir%\i386 directory, ten you can use that for SFC when it asks for the CD.
