my dvd+rw drive is super loud, how do i reduce the noise? right now i found a temporary fix by taking a little cheap key from those locks out of a 25 cent dispense machine and i jam it right above the door right before it closes. i know it is not god for it, but it is the only thing i can do to quiet it down.

AnyDVD also has an option to slow down drives to make them quieter.

Adding gum would only wreck the drive and making it dirty. What terramex and jito463 said is the better option.

To avoid breaking things, go the software route for sure
