game database - a question...

I'm new here so please be gentle for me
In section 'game database' in the chart there're headings: 'game', 'version', 'protection'; 'version' and 'comments'.
I understand that the first heading 'version' is a version of a game.
My question is what is the second 'version'? A version of what?

the second version is the copy protection version whilst the first version is the game version
